You’re Successful—So Why Don’t You Feel More Confident?

Updated: 2 days ago

Many of the high-achievers I know and work with struggle with confidence, even in the face of obvious success. Why? Because we’re taught that success builds confidence and so we chase gold stars, tying our self-worth to external validation, praise, and how we measure up to others.

And, it kind of works. We feel good as long as we’re accomplishing. But the moment we slow down—even just to rest—self-doubt creeps in.

Am I doing enough?

Am I falling behind?

This is The Confidence Trap: Success builds confidence, but not self-worth. And without self-worth, that confidence is fragile. It depends on your output, others’ opinions, and whether you’re keeping up.

That’s why slowing down can feel so uncomfortable. When we stop achieving, we start questioning. We fear we’re lazy, falling behind, or losing relevance. So we keep pushing—not just to succeed, but to silence the self-doubt.

Oh, I know this trap intimately—because I lived it. For years, my answer to any discomfort was to get on my bike and ride. When work felt overwhelming, relationships got hard, or self-doubt started to bubble up—I clipped in, put my head down, and pushed harder.

In many ways, it looked admirable: training for Ironman and Iditarod races, travelling for adventures, excelling at work. But the truth? I built my confidence on performance and accomplishment, but my self-worth never caught up. It couldn’t, because I never stopped long enough to let it grow roots.

That’s the cost of tying our confidence to doing. It only works as long as we keep moving. But the second we pause—even just to breathe—it crumbles. That’s why rest can feel threatening. Because in that stillness, the doubts surface and we're taken hostage by our inner critic.

But here’s what I’ve learned: self-worth doesn’t come from doing more—it comes from being willing to pause, feel, and witness the full truth of who we are—not just what we accomplish. This is where the real confidence lives.

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure it out alone either. Coaching can help you find your way back to yourself—to a confidence that’s not built on speed, but on self-trust.
